In the sunny city of St. Augustine, Florida, two 5th-grade classmates, Allen and Leo, rode the same yellow school bus every morning. Their bus driver, Mr. Clayton, was always waiting for them with a big smile.
🌞 Morning Routines in St. Augustine
Allen lived in a cozy house near Vilano Beach, and every morning he waved goodbye to his mom, who ran a small bakery. The smell of cinnamon rolls always followed him to the bus stop.
Leo, on the other hand, lived closer to the Old Town district, where his dad worked as a tour guide. Every morning, Leo heard the clip-clop of horse carriages passing his street.
Even though their neighborhoods were different, Allen and Leo always met at the same bus stop. They would talk about homework, baseball cards, or the newest video games as they waited.
🚌 Mr. Clayton — The Friendly Driver
Mr. Clayton had been driving the school bus for many years. He knew every student’s name, their favorite snack, and even whose birthdays were coming up. Each morning he greeted them:
“Good morning, champs! Ready for another bright day?”
He kept the bus neat, safe, and cheerful. Sometimes he played soft music, and sometimes he told jokes so funny even the shyest kids giggled.
📚 School Days in 5th Grade
Allen and Leo loved their school days—recess kickball, cafeteria pizza Fridays, reading time, and group science projects. After school, they rode the same bus back home, where Mr. Clayton always reminded them:
“Buckle up, buddies. Safety first!”
One week before Thanksgiving, their teacher Mrs. Parker told the class:
“Thanksgiving is about gratitude. Think about someone in your life who helps you every day.”
Allen and Leo looked at each other instantly.
“Mr. Clayton!” they shouted together.

🦃 The Big Thanksgiving Idea
That afternoon, on the bus ride home, they noticed Mr. Clayton helping a little first-grader tie her shoelaces. He always went the extra mile.
Allen whispered, “We should do something special for him.”
Leo nodded, “Let’s make a Thanksgiving surprise!”
After school, Allen bought a box of cinnamon cookies from his mom’s bakery. Leo and his dad made a small thank-you card with a picture of the St. Augustine Lighthouse on it.
Inside, they wrote:
“Dear Mr. Clayton,
Thank you for keeping us safe and happy every day.
You make our mornings brighter.
Happy Thanksgiving!
— Allen & Leo”
🚌 The Surprise Morning
The next day, the boys waited excitedly at the bus stop. When the yellow bus stopped, Allen handed the gift bag to Mr. Clayton.
“This is for you!” Leo added shyly.
Mr. Clayton blinked, surprised. “For me? But… why?”
Allen smiled. “Because you take care of us every day.”
Leo nodded. “And you make our bus rides fun!”
Mr. Clayton opened the card, and his eyes grew warm and shiny.
“This… means a lot, boys. Thank you. You made my Thanksgiving special.”
He carefully placed the gift beside his seat. “Hop in, champs. Best ride ever today!”

🌟 Moral of the Story
Kindness doesn’t need to be big.
Even a small thank-you can brighten someone’s whole day.
🧡 Ending Note
From that day on, the school bus felt a little warmer, a little happier — because two boys remembered to say thank you.
