Allen and Leo were middle school classmates in St. Augustine, Florida. They loved studying together, riding bikes, and eating fruit smoothies after school. One morning, their teacher, Mrs. Carter, made an exciting announcement.
“Next month, we’ll have our annual School Spelling Bee Competition! Anyone interested can sign up.”
Allen’s eyes brightened.
Leo gasped, “We should try! It sounds fun.”
Both boys raised their hands immediately.
⭐ Planning Together
After school, Allen and Leo sat under the big oak tree near the playground.
“So, how do we get ready?” Leo asked.
Allen took out his notebook. “Let’s make a plan! Step one: learn new words every day.”
Leo nodded seriously. “And step two: practice spelling out loud—just like in the real competition.”
They also decided:
-
To read at least 30 minutes a day
-
To quiz each other on tricky words
-
To practice confidence by saying the words clearly
-
To listen carefully before spelling
Their plan felt strong, and they were excited.
📖 Study Sessions Begin
Every afternoon, they met at Allen’s house for “Spelling Power Hour.”
Allen’s mom brought them apple slices and water while the boys practiced.
“Okay, your word is ‘caterpillar’,” Allen said.
Leo smiled. “C-A-T-E-R-P-I-L-L-A-R.”
“Correct!”
Then it was Leo’s turn to quiz.
“Your word is ‘responsibility’.”
Allen took a deep breath and spelled it perfectly.
The boys cheered whenever they got a word right. When they misspelled something, they didn’t get upset—they just tried again.
📝 Helping Each Other Grow
One day, Leo struggled with the word “achievement.”
He spelled it wrong twice and sighed.
“I’m never going to get it,” he said quietly.
Allen shook his head. “Hey, learning takes time. I’ll help you.”
He broke the word into parts:
A-CHIEVE-MENT
Leo repeated after him until he got it right.
“See?” Allen said. “You CAN do it.”
Leo smiled again.
Another day, Allen couldn’t remember how many “r’s” were in “embarrass.”
Leo taught him a little trick: “Two r’s because embarrassment really rolls into your cheeks!
They laughed and kept practicing.

🏫 The Big Day
Finally, the spelling bee day arrived. The school stage was decorated with yellow and black bee cutouts. Parents filled the seats, and students lined up nervously backstage.
Allen whispered, “We’ve got this.”
Leo nodded. “No matter what happens—we tried our best!”
They walked on stage with confidence.
Round after round, they spelled words like:
-
“courageous”
-
“magnificent”
-
“environment”
They cheered quietly for each other after every correct word.
🏆 A Sweet Ending
In the final round, Leo missed a tricky word, and he stepped back with a shy smile. Allen reached the last round and finished as second place winner.
Leo ran to him. “You did amazing!”
Allen replied, “We did it together. I couldn’t have done this without you.”
Their families hugged them proudly.
