One bright Saturday morning, Leo invited Allen to spend the holiday at his grandparents’ home. The cozy white house stood near the Matanzas River, surrounded by tall oak trees and a beautiful garden full of vegetables and herbs. Because of the flowing water and birds singing, the place felt calm, warm, and welcoming.
Both boys felt happy and excited as they began their day together.

Helping on the Farm
That morning, the sun rose gently over the small farm. Soon after, Leo’s grandparents got ready for a busy day, and Allen and Leo were eager to help.
First, the boys walked to the chicken coop. Carefully, they collected fresh eggs and placed them gently into baskets. Nearby, the vegetable garden was full of life. There were ripe tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, and leafy greens ready to be picked.
“These are all homegrown,” Grandpa said proudly. “When you take care of the land, it takes care of you.”
Setting Up the Roadside Stand
Next, the boys helped set up a small roadside stand near the farm gate. They arranged the eggs neatly and placed the vegetables in wooden crates. Meanwhile, Grandma made a simple sign that read:
Fresh Eggs & Homegrown Vegetables.
As neighbors and travelers passed by, Allen and Leo greeted everyone with friendly smiles.
“Good morning! Fresh eggs today!” Allen called out.
Then Leo added, “Our chickens are raised with care, and these vegetables come straight from our garden.”
Learning Business Skills
As the morning went on, Grandpa taught the boys how to count money, give the correct change, and write sales in a small notebook. At the same time, Grandma explained that honesty, patience, and planning are important in any business.
“Even a small farm stand teaches responsibility,” Grandma said. “You learn the value of hard work and fairness.”
During a quiet moment, Allen asked, “Is this what self-reliance means?”
“Yes,” Grandpa replied kindly. “Self-reliance means using your skills and effort to help yourself and others.”
A Proud Ending to the Day
By midday, most of the eggs were sold, and the vegetable crates were almost empty. As a result, the boys felt tired but proud of their work.
“I didn’t know farming could teach business skills,” Allen said.
Leo smiled and replied, “And it feels good to earn something through our own effort.”
Finally, as they packed up the stand and walked back toward the white house by the river, the boys understood something important. Food, confidence, and success grow from care, effort, and family wisdom.
That holiday at Leo’s grandparents’ home became a memory they would always treasure—a lasting lesson in self-reliance, teamwork, and respect for the land. 🌱🥚🏡
